Scenes from the past week. Slowly learning and curiously experiencing the new reality of being a family. Slowly feeling spring in the air. And slowly learning new routines of daily life management.

Getting into 2021 and it feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel, slowly but steadily. We've spent the biggest part of last year preparing the arrival of our first son. It was a journey of introspection, development and new perspectives. And it was exciting in a way never felt before, profoundly challenging yet inspiring.
This changes everything.

This was a special assignment for me to meet bishop Georg Bätzing for Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin in January.
I was raised by my grandparents in rural Bavaria in a very conservative catholic environment.
After experiencing the double standards and emotional (and sometimes physical) pressure certain members of the church put on their believers, i turned my back towards the church and finally dropped out in my early 30s.
Talking with the bishop about my reasons to drop out i've found that he was understanding and willing to listen, still he is a man of his church and it takes a lot to reform the centuries old structures of an institution that has caused so much pain and some good in the name of god.
In the light of the recent but ages-old discussion on abuse in the catholic church, he found words of openness and compassion, yet it has to be proven if there is a true and honest ambition to change what is nothing more than a broken system with too much struggles of power and moral bankruptcy.
